São Vicente

Gateway to the Wild North Coast

Located in one of the most beautiful valleys in Madeira, São Vicente is the gateway to the rugged north coast. It's famous for its volcanic caves, established in underground lava channels formed roughly 890,000 years ago. The village itself features a charming church and cobblestone streets surrounded by towering green mountains.

How to Get to São Vicente by Bus

São Vicente is well-served by SIGA buses. Many routes connecting Funchal to the north of the island (like Porto Moniz) pass through São Vicente. The journey from Funchal takes approximately 60-70 minutes via the mountain pass.

380
Funchal ↔ Porto Moniz

The main north-coast express. Stops at São Vicente center. Operated by SIGA.

340
Funchal ↔ São Vicente

Direct service focusing on the valley and caves. Operated by SIGA.

💡 Travel Tip: If visiting the Volcanic Caves, get off at the specialized "São Vicente Caves" stop, which is slightly before the main village center. Download the Madeira Bus app for precise stop locations.
Routes 380 and 340 reach São Vicente in about an hour, and the volcanic caves are a self-access attraction — so the bus works well. If you'd rather see São Vicente as part of the whole north-west coast in one guided day, some visitors take a west & north-coast day trip (sponsored) More options ↓

What to See in São Vicente

The Volcanic Caves and Volcanism Centre are the main attractions (check opening hours as they vary). Visit the beautiful 17th-century parish church. Walk along the waterfront (Calhau) to watch the waves and enjoy the dramatic scenery. The valley is also famous for its traditional vineyards.

Best Time to Visit

São Vicente is beautiful year-round. It's often cooler and more humid than Funchal. In late August, the village hosts its famous secular festivities (Festas de São Vicente), which are popular island-wide.
